At first, he was in the lumber business with his father. Then at the age of 20 he went to work for the Pan Handle Railway as a telegraph operator. In 1881 he went to St. Louis as assistant to the superintendent of the Vandalia Road. Then he moved to Chicago to become a broker, eventually moving to New York to work as a broker at the Stock Exchange. He moved back to Anderson at the time of the gas boom in 1891 and went to work again for his father at the lumber company, eventually taking over The Atherton Lumber Co. He lived at 22 W. 5th St. in Anderson when he died. -Brough Stewart
