George Batton was the Sheriff for the Eddy County Sheriff's Department in New Mexico. He served 14 years for the Police Force, dying in the line of duty at age 58. He previously had served 4 years as a Deputy for Eddy County and 8 years as Sheriff in Brown County, Texas. His last two years was as Sheriff of Eddy County. While with Brown County in Texas, he witnessed Sheriff Charles Bell being shot and killed, Sheriff Batton shot and killed the suspect. Sheriff Batton was attempting to apprehend an escaped prisoner from Texas, who was serving a Life Sentence for murder. Sheriff Batton went to the suspects location, with a posse of deputies and citizens. He surrounded the suspects hideout in the town of Hope. As Sheriff Batton entered the house, the suspect jumped out, confronting him, shooting Sheriff Batton in the stomach, killing him instantly. The suspect continued firing, wounding a deputy. Members of the posse returned fire, killing the suspect. Sheriff Batton was survived by his wife, three daughters, and a son. His son later followed in his fathers footsteps, and was elected Sheriff of Eddy County.
