Judge Field was the first Judge of the County Court of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He served from 1821 to March 22, 1827. He was also one of the first vestrymen of the Christ Episcopal Church and a resident trustee of the University of Alabama. He owned considerable property in Tuscaloosa.

In 1824 he was one of the electoral candidates for William H. Crawford who ran against Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams for President of the United States.

He was married first to Millicine Young. He married Nancy Starr after the death of his first wife. He was the son of Alexander Field.
