Mr. Brewer , 82, of Southminster Continuing Care Community, Charlotte, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at Southminster due to complications from diabetes and Alzheimer's.

Mr. Brewer was born August 20, 1922 in Bonlee, NC, son of the late Curtis Claude Brewer and Mabel Lambe Brewer . He attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and was a graduate of the UNC Executive Program. He was a World War II US Army veteran. Mr. Brewer had a distinguished career in banking in Siler City, Charlotte and Salisbury, retiring in 1986 as Senior Vice President of First Union National Bank with 40 years of service. He was very involved in community affairs wherever his career took him.

In Siler City, he was past president of the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Siler City Development Corporation and served as chairman of the board of the Chatham Hospital.

While in Charlotte, he served on the Mecklenburg Zoning Commission and the board of Mecklenburg Heart Association. He was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church and Myers Park Country Club.

In Salisbury, he served as chairman of the United Way campaign and as president of the Salisbury Sales & Marketing Club. He also served on the boards of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, American Diabetes Assoc., Rowan County Economic Development Corp., NC United Way, and Salisbury Rotary Club.

For 26 years, Mr. and Mrs. Brewer enjoyed many happy times at their home in Hound Ears Country Club, Blowing Rock, NC, and he served several terms on the board of Hound Ears Club. Since moving to Southminster, he served on the Residents Council and numerous committees.

Mr. Brewer was a member of First United Methodist Church, Siler City, NC, River Hills Country Club, Lake Wylie, SC, and Oasis Shrine Club.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Gladys S. Brewer ; daughter, Connie B. Nuttall of Charlotte; sons, Ted L. Brewer of Charlotte, Curtis C. Brewer III of Raleigh and Barry D. Brewer of Pittsboro, NC; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and brother, James L. Brewer of Siler City. He was predeceased by a brother, W. Donald Brewer of Pinehurst.

A special thanks to his loyal and faithful caregiver, Robin McCorkle, and to the staff of Southminster.

Visitation at Southminster will be Thursday, September 2, 2004 at 7 o'clock p.m. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 3rd at 11 o'clock a.m. at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, Siler City, NC, with burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
