Private 53rd Regiment
Alabama Partisan Rangers
Confederate States Army

Son of Jesse Edwin Zachry and Elizabeth Cooper. Married, 20 Feb 1853, in Macon Co., AL, to Margaret Henrietta Wallace.

James Smiley was listed as a farmer in the 1860 U. S. Census for Macon County, Alabama and he was also Tax Collector for this County.

James Smiley Zachry joined the Army of the Confederacy in 1860 and served throughout the War in Company B of Macon County, Alabama.

At one time he was cut off from his Company and while trying to make his way back, the Union Army passed so near that he felt he could have almost touched them. After a few days of hardships he succeeded in rejoining his Company (According to family history).

Although the above family history states James was in Company B, the following record shows James to have been in Company A. From a bit of research, The 53rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment, Partisan Rangers, was organized by increasing the 1st Cavalry Battalion to regimental size at Montgomery on 5 November 1862. Recruits were from Autauga, Coffee, Coosa, Dale, Dallas, Lauderdale, Lowndes, Macon, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Tallapoosa and Wilcox counties. Some of the members of Company B are found on the rolls of 2nd Company A but were paroled as members of Company B. In either instance, it is obvious that James Smiley Zachry served the Southern Cause.
