Plane Plunges Into Spillway At Grenada Dam

Veteran airman, Christian Faser, Sr., of Winona made the ultimate flight into the great blue yonder Sunday afternoon as his plane plunged to Grenada Dam spillway. Fate's inscrutable way of writing the finale to his life's 70-year span doubtlessly would have received his approval of this quick drama of the airways.

Briefly before the occurrence, he had been carrying his grandson, Christian Faser, III, and young friend, Walter Gulley, on an air excursion when illness of the latter had necessitated his leaving them at the Winona airport. And he was in flight again to meet his son, Christian Faser, Jr., representative in the State legislature, his brother, Henry Minor Faser, Jackson insurance executive, and two friends, W. W. Jenkins, Winona cafe owner, and G. E. Box, businessman and former sheriff, at the Grenada airport.
This foursome had driven up to the Grenada Reservoir area in Mr. Jenkins' car and were enroute to the airport when they sighted Mr. Faser's 4-passenger Piper Tri-Pacer plane, saw it circle the dam, and then go into a steep downward dive. Not seeing it rise, they decided to return to the dam and found it had crashed into the 80-foot levee near the gatehouse.

The body of the flier was taken in an ambulance to the Grenada hospital, but he had passed away. An excellent pilot, it is surmised that a blackout from a heart attack brought about the plane's plunge to earth.

Mr. Faser, Sr., was a pharmacist and owner of Faser Drugs in Winona. He was born and attended school here and in 1906 he graduated from the St. Louis School of Pharmacy. He opened a drug store in Shaw, and in 1907 he married the former Miss Pearl Wrenn there. Later he moved to Monroe, La., and operated a drug store there for 25 years. In 1940, he returned to Winona and opened Faser Drugs which he operated until his death. Recently his son, Christian Faser, Jr., has been associated with him in the drug store and will continue to conduct the business.

A member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and former member of the Civil Air Patrol, Mr. Faser was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, licensed civilian pilots. He volunteered for service in World War II but was not called on account of his age, although he was in vigorous good health to the moment of his death.

His numerous friends crowded the chapel of Lee Funeral Home, where funeral services were conducted at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, by the Rev. M. J. Peden and the Rev. R. S. Lowe. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Local airmen serving as pallbearers were E. S. Corban, C. R. Holladay, S. H. Hunger, Jr., J. E. Ellis, John Holder and E. C. Benoit.

Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Wrenn Faser of Winona; two sons, Rep. Christian Faser, Jr., of Winona, and Major Karl Edward Faser with the Marine Corps in Seoul, Korea, a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Stanard of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister, Mrs. Katie Faser White of Birmingham; two brothers, Dr. Henry M. Faser of Jackson and Ward Faser of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
