Charlotte J. Boucher of Galena was appointed guardian of the minor heirs of Cyrelle Boucher.

Rather than to have the five children of Mrs. Charlotte Boucher separated from their mother by ordering them to the home for soldiers’ orphans at Atchison, Judge J. H. Ellis in juvenile court on Wednesday, donated a sum of money to be used for the caring of the fatherless children and informed the mother he would assume the responsibility of assuring her they would be provided for until she received the pension due her from the government as a widow of a soldier. Application for a pension was made some time ago and it is said Mrs. Boucher will receive a sum of money within a short time.

Mrs. Boucher was left a widow about one year ago, her husband dying at the home in East Galena. Since his death she has been compelled to work exceedingly hard to provide for her children, but has succeeded in furnishing them with the necessaries of life. She has not, however, been able to provide for them as well as she would like, and friends at last succeeded in having her appeal to the juvenile court to place the children in the state institution until she secures a good home and be in a position to properly care for them.

Wednesday morning, with Constable Joe Powell, Mrs. Boucher came to Columbus, and appeared before Judge Ellis, stating her desire to have the children placed in the orphans' home, but the official’s heart was touched with the pitiful position in which the woman had been thrown and instead of using his authority in having the mother separated from her offspring, officiously offered his assistance in caring for them, that they might remain together.

Mrs. Boucher returned to Galena with her heart much lighter than when she left for Columbus a few hours previous.

The Galena Times said of this case: Mrs. Charlotte Boucher, and juvenile officer, Joe Powell, went to Columbus this morning with the former's five children, Maud, Cyrus, Cyril, Charles and John, aged 14, 10, 8, 6 and 3, respectively, to consult the juvenile judge relative to placing them in the home for soldiers' children at Atchison, Kan., their father, who is now dead, having been an old soldier.

The mother is a comely woman of perhaps 35 years. Her husband died over a year ago, leaving the family penniless. She has by her daily labor provided her little ones with a scant living, and kept them in school for all the time, but the task was so great that she decided to appeal for help.

Mrs. Boucher said this morning: “I can hardly bear to have my children go away, but if I can place them in the home and secure work and save what money I make it won't take long for me to buy a little house for us to live in. Only death could separate me from them if I did not think it was for their good. I want them all to have a good education and if I can get money enough ahead to buy a home then I'm sure I can manage to get their food and clothing until they are old enough to support themselves. I want to keep them altogether."

The Boucher's have been living in a rented cottage at 906 Mineral avenue.
