Jose came from a large family. He had 1 sister and 9 brothers and was 1 of 5 brothers that served in Vietnam and 4 came back. A couple of them did more then one tour of Vietnam.
Joe was born in Albuquerque and raised in Cedar Crest, New Mexico and enlisted in the Marines 22 June 1966, at the Albuquerque Recruiting Office with his two best friends, Isidro Baca and Dennis Meredith.
They went to Vietnam together and Isidro Baca and Dennis Meredith were assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Isidro Baca died during combat
21 August 1967. Dennis Meredith came home after his tour in Vietnam.
When Joe arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to 3rd Platoon of Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
In early April 1967 the North Vietnamese Army's' 325 Division (the 18th, 95thand 101st Regiments) moved through Laos and positioned themselves to capture the
Khe Sanh Combat Base.
By 25 April the 18th NVA Regiment had placed itself on Hill 861 one of the hills which controlled the terrain around Khe Sanh. The 3rd Marine Division Commander determined that the 3 hills had to be denied to the enemy. After much heavy fighting the Marines were able to capture Hill 861 and annihilated the 18th NVA Regiment and turned towards Hills 881 North and 881 South which was being defended by the 95th NVA Regiment.
Three companies from the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment engaged the 95th NVA Regiment on Hill 881 North and lost 14 men. Echo Company lost 2 men, PFC Joe C Garcia and PFC John F Tino.
Joe died in the vicinity of Huong Hoa, Hill 881 North, 9 kilometers west northwest of Khe Sanh Airfield, as a result of shrapnel wounds to both legs,torso and head, due to NVA mortar fire.
Joe was single and served his country for 10 months and 8 days and was KIA# 11,690.
He was 20 years,10 months and 19 days old.
Survived by his parents; Narciso and Rosalia G Garcia, his sister; Sara and his brothers; Pete, Dave, Robert, Marvin, Narciso Jr ,Larry, Jerry, Esteven and Abino of Box 58, Cedar Crest, NM.
