The son of Calvin and Ester (Evarts) Pier was born in New Haven, Addison County, VT., on March 31, 1807. With a limited education of only 5 years, the young Edward was thoroughly trained to work. At the age of twelve, the family moved to Ripon and lived in rustic simplicity. Edward was self taught in the making and mending of shoes, as to save the families meager earning. On June 2, 1829 Miss Harriet N. Kendall of Rochester, VT became his wife and on August 25, 1834, looking to improve his condition, the couple accompanied by brothers, Colwert E. and Oscar set out for the Michigan Territory. In March 1837 Edward settled near Fond du Lac and employed himself into the growing community. He was on the first Board of Commissioners and President for ten years; County Treasurer, State Senator for one year: Superintendent of the Poor for ten years: Trustee of the State Insane Asylum in Madison and President of two banks. His wife Harriet breathed her last on August 21, 1864. Four children mourned the loss: Ann P., wife of J. W. Carpenter; Ruth R., wife of L. J. Harvey; Carrie S., wife of H. R. Skinner and Colwert K., later to be President of the Savings Bank of Fond du Lac. (Edited for content)
