Son of M. D. and Mary Coats. Married Nancy A. Jones about 1823 in Newberry County, South Carolina. Member of Bush River Baptist Church, Newberry County, South Carolina. Arrived in Dallas County in 1845 with family. Coats Cemetery is located on the land where he settled near Long Creek community in the area later known as Tripp (1900) and then Sunnyvale (1953). Member of the Bethany Missionary Baptist Church at Long Creek settlement, Texas. Father of: Nancy Coats, John J. Coats, Thomas Dodson Coats, Fannie Coats Lawrence, Elizabeth Coats Browder, James Alexander Coats, Marion Able Coats, Martha Ann. J. Coats Caldwell Paschall, John Will Coats, Sarah Margaret Coats Manning and Perniecia Katherine Coats Johnston.

Stephen Decatur Lawrence , who purchased the tombstone, was his grandson.
