When Dr. F.M. Whiting, who answered the call, arrived, he found the body lying in the yard at the home.
Hottman had apparently walked outside the house after calling Dr. Whiting. A neighbor reported she had seen Hottman leave the building unaided.
Dr. Whiting said an autopsy would be held late this afternoon to determine cause of death. Undersheriff Wm. Nisbet said he had been informed by the doctor that death had been caused either by ptomaine poisoning or heart trouble.
Hottman came to the Oroville district many years ago. In those days he was employed as a stage driver between Oroville and Yankee Hill. In later years he operated the Bridge Street Store, opposite the high school, and recently he worked as a clerk in a Montgomery street cigar store.
He had been married to Annie Reagan, a member of a pioneer Oroville family. His wife died 12 years ago. They had no children. Other relatives reside in Kansas.
Funeral services will be announced by the Thomas Funeral Home.
