Nancy Boelman, 61, of Ackley, died on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at the Heritage Care Center. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider giving memorials in the form of a random act of kindness in Nancy's honor, per her wishes.

Nancy Jo (Hartema) Boelman-Ludwig was born on August 5, 1958, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. She was the only child of Laurence and Carelyn (Harken) Hartema. Many times, she would hear people ask her dad if he was ready for more kids. His reply would be, “We stopped at perfection!” (And that response is where Nancy learned her infamous rolling of her eyes and saying “Oh forever more! )

Nancy grew up on the family farm south of Austinville, Iowa. She would smile at the fact that she went to four different schools. (Austinville K-2, Ackley-Geneva 3-4, Aplington 5 through graduation in 1976). Nancy was voted most witty in her class by fellow classmates.

She attended AIB in Des Moines and all the while she never moved from the farm. In 1979 she married Jack Boelman, they later divorced. They were the parents of Nick and Jena.

Nancy married Steve Ludwig.

Nancy spent many years in banking. In 1977-1980 at Kelsey Bank, 1980-1986 at Citizen State Bank, and 1986-2003 at Greenbelt Bank & Trust, where she designed the new Greenbelt Bank logo. She then worked at Heartland Windows as payroll-collections and accounts payable/receivable from 2003-2016. Her last job was at Heritage Care Center from 2016-2019 where she worked until diagnosed with terminal bile duct cancer.

In 2003 Nancy and Steve moved to a small acreage where enjoyed the openness, peacefulness and animals, both wild and tame. They worked hard to improve it and make it grow but still found time to sit by the campfire with friends and family, just being silly.

Nancy enjoyed making people laugh. She would smile when people would ask her birthdate she’d reply “8-5-58, oops I told it to you backwards, it’s really 8-5-58.” She became known at Heritage Care Center as the “joke of the day lady” with her new and usually corny jokes daily. She really loved to make people laugh.

Nancy is survived by her husband Steven Ludwig; children, Nick Boelman of Reinbeck, Iowa, Jena (Andrew) Jones of Kelley, Iowa, and daughter of the heart, Tori Boelman of Holland, Iowa; sister of the heart, Sue (Dave) Abbas of Ackley, Iowa; grandchildren, Grant Laurence and Bria Lyn Boelman; and step-children, Jillian (Rocky) Robbins-Kennedy, Jacoby and Brynnley of Norwalk, Iowa, Sean Ludwig of Popejoy, Iowa, and Channon Ludwig of Des Moines, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Laurence and Carelyn Hartema.

Nancy’s last “words of wisdom” of which she had many, “Be happy with what you have, have faith and be kind to everyone and everything” (but if you can’t) then roll your eyes while saying “Oh forever more” and walk away smiling…
