She started her early education in Jenkins County Schools before her family’s relocation to South Florida to seek a better life. Irene attended Dillard Comprehensive School in Broward County Florida, where she graduated in 1963. Soon thereafter, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she enrolled in Tennessee State University. She had to return home where she continued her Education in nursing at Sheridan Vocational School. After many years of service, she retired from Broward County School System where she worked as a job coach at Wingate Oaks. However, she continued on in her last earthly assignment as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and auntie.
Irene was member of Mount Herman AME Church for 62 years and served on the Channie Moore Stewardess
Board Number 1. She enjoyed being a Dillard High School alumni and spending time with her beloved friends and classmates from 1963. Irene bled blue and gray and even served as class secretary and vice president. Traveling and visiting new places, especially if there was a new casino, were some of her favorite hobbies. Home entertaining was
also one of her favorite things to do. She loved to be around family and friends. Irene was the life of the party,
tell it like it is, “Buddy Roe” with a heart of gold. She was genuinely a loving person whose legacy will never be
forgotten.
Irene is survived by her most treasured daughter Leslie Hooks; grandchildren Alecs Baker and Amari Smith; her great-grandchild Maleah Baker all of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and one sister Iris Dismukes (Joe Ronald) of Nashville, Tennessee; B.J. Dentson, brother in law of Fort Pierce, Florida Kenneth Dentson, brother in law Fort Pierce, Florida two special nieces - Leah and Lori Dismukes; a great nephew- Preston Dismukes of Nashville, Tennessee; special extended family members (The Bynes); her God-children Troy, Marilyn, Dwellie, and
Angel; and a host of Nieces, Nephews & Cousins and other relatives
