Shirley Dean Cole, 74, of Haywood, died Wednesday, July 22, at McAlester Regional Health Center. Visitation will be Thursday until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, July 24, at 10:00 a.m. at the Haywood Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Brinkley officiating. Burial will follow at Pryor Cemetery in Stuart. Pallbearers are Jeffery Osborne, Jonathan O’Dell, Rodney Brinkley, Eric Clark, Ronnie Wilson and Rick Ramsey.

Shirley Dean Cole was born on May 18, 1946 in McAlester to Lonnie and Ruth (Brooks) Cotney. She grew up mainly in the Savanna where she graduated high school. She then attended Eastern State College before attending East Central College in Ada, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree. Shirley worked at McAlester High School as a teacher and head librarian for many years, until her retirement. She and Arla Cole were married on March 1, 1975 in El Reno. He preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 2014. Shirley was an energetic lady, she enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, arrowhead hunting and watching the Cow Parade. She particularly liked spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved to go to church and fellowship with her friends there.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Steven Armstrong, Donald Armstrong and wife Shelli, and Richard Armstrong and wife Kim; grandchildren, Sterling Armstrong and wife Cassie, Melinda Hill and husband Brad, Tabitha Biafore, Justin Armstrong, Whitney Hull and husband Matt, Jordan Wilson and husband Brad, Maggie Armstrong, and Jesse Patton and wife Ali; 17 great grandchildren; a sister, Josie Cotney Kardokus; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arla, a grandson, Chris Armstrong; a brother, Everett Cotney, and a sister, Clara Jean Newman.
