Sergeant for the 362nd Infantry 91st Division of the Army during World War II. He was killed in action.

Oran, March 4.- Remains of Sgt. Walter D. Carter, killed in action in Italy, arrived at the Earl J. Smith Funeral Home from Chicago, on Thursday, to remain until rites Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baptist Church. Rev. C. E. Warren will be in charge, and burial will be in the Friend Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded by the Scott County Memorial Post of the American Legion

Sgt. Carter was serving with an infantry unit as a machine gunner when he fell in battle July 18, 1944. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Carter. Sgt. Carter was 23 years old.

He was born at Ash Hill, Butler County, Oct. 4, 1920, and moved to Oran with his parents in 1923. He was educated in the schools here, and was a member of the Baptist Church. Before entering the Army Nov. 2, 1942, he was in the CCC for three years. After enlisting in the Army he was trained at Camp White and Camp Adair in Oregon, and was transferred overseas in March, 1944. Sgt. Carter first saw service in Africa.

Surviving, besides his parents, are five sisters, Mrs. O. B. Freeman and Mrs. Keifer of Oran, Mary Ann, Norma Gene and Imogene Carter, at home; two brothers, Orville C. Carter, in the services and stationed in New Jersey, and Lloyd Glenn Carter, at home, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Verble of Ash Hill.
