Thomas Walter Tardy Jr.

Mr. Thomas Walter Tardy Jr., 80, of Winona, died July 12, 2000, of heart failure at Grenada Lake Medical Center in Grenada.

Mr. Tardy was a native of Carrollton and had lived in Winona during most of his adult life. He served during World War II as a member of the United States Army Air Corp. Mr. Tardy was the owner of Tardy Furniture Company, with furniture stores in Winona and Grenada. He was a very active civic and community leader. He served for almost two decades on the Winona School Board.

Mr. Tardy was also a founding member and served for 20 years on the board of directors of Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona. He was also one of the founders of the Merchants and Farmers Bank in Winona. He served on the initial board of the Winona Leadership School and was a graduate of its first leadership class. Mr. Tardy was a devout member of Moore Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served in numerous capacities including chairman of the administrative board. He was also a member of the board of aldermen for the City of Winona. Mr. Tardy was an active Rotarian, having served as president of the Winona Rotary Club. He was an avid golfer, who served as president and board member of the Winona Country Club.

Mr. Tardy was preceded in death by his wife, Lela Holman Tardy, to whom he had been married to for 57 years, and later by his wife, Bertha Miller Tardy.

Funeral services were held July 15 at Moore Memorial United Methodist Church in Winona with Rev. Randy Owen officiating. Burial was in the Winona Garden of Memory.

Mr. Tardy is survived by daughter, Annette Tardy Dardaman of Grenada; two sons, Thomas W. Tardy III of Jackson, Charles H. Tardy of Hattiesburg; one brother, Paul Raymond Tardy of Cleveland; one stepdaughter, Roxanne Miller Ballard of Winona; six grandchildren, Chris John Dardaman Jr., Charles Thomas Dardaman, Katherine Jane Tardy, Charles Alexander Tardy, Thomas W. Tardy IV and Mary Margaret Tardy; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Frank Ballard, Joe Townsend, Bill Townsend, Macy Hart, George Harris Jr. and Paul Pittman. Honorary pallbearers were George Harris Sr., Joe Hunter, Chut Billingsley, Tom Dulin, David Dotson, Sam Jones Jr. and Ellis Hart.

Lee Funeral Home of Winona was in charge of arrangements.
