Born the oldest of eleven children of William and Lucy (Richardson) in Fayette County, Indiana. At the beginning of the Civil War many of his family members joined the Union Army. He enlisted in Company K, 47th Indiana Regiment on December 13, 1861. Two of his uncle's, Isaac and Howard Richardson, and his cousin, Alvah B. Jeffery, were also in the 47th Indiana. His father, William, served in the 86th Indiana Infantry Regiment.

As often happened to Civil War soldiers he became ill. He died in a field hospital near Helena, Arkansas on March 11, 1863. He was buried there. After the war, Union dead were moved to the National Cemeteries at Memphis, TN and Little Rock, AR. It is unknown which one he was buried, and probably marked as Unknown.
