Mort was an inquisitive child, always taking things apart to see how they worked and putting them back together. This was a trait that he carried with him through adulthood. Early on, he worked with Ray Martin, pouring foundations, and working with concrete. He was proud of the fact that in his early twenties, he had jacked up and poured a new foundation under his parent’s home. He owned a repair shop in Davis City for a while, repairing vehicles and completing body work, which he continued as a hobby for years to come. When his father retired from farming, he took the reins and managed the cattle operation for several years. Finally, he ended his manufacturing career as the Grinding Foreman and Gearbox Specialist at Industrial Hardfacing after 30+ years of devoted service.
Mort was a true character, full of fun and laughter. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and hosted wonderful annual gatherings on the Fourth, at his home in Lamoni. Generous to a fault and a friend to all, he could always be called upon to assist with any unexpected issue. He was mechanically inclined and meticulous in everything he attempted often, fixing vehicles, and working late into the night to help those he cared about. Mort enjoyed boating and was an avid water skier; he also enjoyed cars and racing. He was restoring a Corvette at the time of his passing. His big heart and spectacular laugh will be missed by everyone that knew him.
Mort married Talitha Lancaster on December 28, 1974. To this union, two sons were born. Mort married Lisa Ann Ulsrud in December 1983. To this union, one son and one daughter were born. Mort was a devoted father and grandfather, always an overgrown kid himself, he enjoyed partaking in fun.
Mort was preceded in death by his parents in 2019; his oldest son Shane, in 2015; brother-in-law, Chuck Miller, in 2015; and two beloved nephews, Cedric Barnett and Logan Gilliland.
