American Folk Figure. Born Florence Leona Christie in Oklahoma of Cherokee descent, she is remembered as being the subject of photographer and photojournalist Dorothea Lange's famous photograph "Migrant Mother" (1936). The image became known as an iconic image of The Great Depression. Florence had ten children, and lived until the age of 80, dying from cancer in Scotts Valley, California, in 1983. She outlived her husband Cleo by fifty two years. Her gravestone epitaph reads "Migrant Mother–A Legend of the Strength of American Motherhood."
