Robert "Bob" Barry Newkirk, 78, of Reading, passed away in the Reading Hospital on Friday, August 8, 2014. He was the loving husband of the late Bernice F. (Mellot) Newkirk who passed away in 2010. Born in Reading on June 13, 1936, he was a son of the late Paul and Esther (Hughes) Newkirk. He was a graduate of Reading High School, Class of 1954. Bob joined the US Army on in 1954 and served in the Korean War as PFC until he transferred to the US Army Corp Reserve in 1956. In 1959, he was Honorably Discharge from Fort George G. Meade in Maryland. Bob was a life member of Grace United Methodist Church, Reading and was part of the first confirmation class at the church. He was a huge sports fan and enjoyed going to Reading High School football and basketball games to watch his grandson play. Bob also was an avid Reading Fighting Phil's. He was a member of the East End Athletics for 28 years, the Temple Fire Co. for 25 years, the Falcons and a member of the Veterans of Foreign War in Reading. Surviving are three sons: Robert "Bobby" B. Donmoyer of Reading, Scott A. Donmoyer of Shillington and Gary L. Newkirk of Shillington; a daughter: Donna Lynne (Donmoyer) Phillips and her husband, Samuel C. of West Lawn; two grandsons: Samuel C., II and Robert J. Phillips at home in West Lawn; a brother: Richard Newkirk and his wife, Linda of Reading and a sister: Judith (Newkirk) Miller of Reading.
