Thomas enlisted on 8/13/1862 as a private. He was mustered in on the same day into Co. "B", 24th Wisconsin inf.. He was discharged for promotion on 5/18/1864. He was then commissioned into U.S. Volunteers Aide-DeCampe. He was again discharged for promotion on 3/8/1865. On the same day he was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant General Dept.. He was mustered out on 8/1/1866. He continued his service until 8/5/1870.
