Gary was cremated and his ashes were to be distributed in Mexico. His military honors were held at Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Anniston. A marker was placed here to be near his parents.

Obituary for Gary Vaughn Pugh
ANNISTON: Memorial services for Lt. Col. Gary Vaughn Pugh, 75, U.S. Army Retired, will be Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 1 P.M. at Parker Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Mack Amis, Jr. officiating and with full military honors. The family will receive friends at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel Tuesday from 6-8 P.M. Mr. Pugh died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at his residence. Born August 23, 1932 in Alexander City, Alabama, Mr. Pugh graduated from Clift High School, Opelika, Alabama, and received his BS degree from The University of Omaha, NE and his MBA from Murray State University. He was called to active duty to the US Army in January 1951. After graduating Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer. He was stationed in Korea and Hawaii with the 14th Infantry Regiment serving as a machine gun platoon leader and as the assistant regiment operations officer. He then returned to the United States to attend fixed-wing and helicopter flight schools. Upon graduation from the Infantry Officer's Advanced Course in Ft. Benning, GA, he spent several years in Central and South America, first in Bogotá, Columbia as an Army aviator working with the Inter American Geodic Survey Unit, helping Columbian engineers make maps of their country and then as the Company Commander of Company B, 10th Infantry Division, Ft. Davis, Panama Canal Zone. Gary Pugh was privileged to be selected to attend, and graduated from the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He went on to serve as the Executive Officers of the 17th Cavalry Squadron of the 82nd Airborne Division and at Ft. Bragg, NC. In 1967 he served with the 1st Bgd, of the 101st Airborne Division in combat operations in Viet Nam. After his promotion to LTC in July 1967 he was assigned to the CIA in a leadership capacity with the Provincial Reconnaissance Unit for the remainder of his tour in Viet Nam. His final duty was the Operations Officer of the ROTC Unit at Murray State University, Murray KY. LTC Pugh retired after 20 years service.
He moved to Calhoun County in 1971, first residing in Jacksonville and then moving to Anniston. He first purchased and opened a Traveler's Insurance Office and then in 1972 opened Gary Pugh Realty. Mr. Pugh purchased and opened the first real estate franchise company in Calhoun County in 1976 and began doing business as CENTURY 21 Gary Pugh Realty. In addition to being a real estate broker and real estate instructor, he became a homebuilder, building homes throughout Calhoun County. He served as President of The Anniston Board of Realtors in 1982. In 1998 he opened a Nextel store, Bama Cellular on South Quintard Avenue where he gave the "colorful elephant" a permanent home. Additionally he opened Bama Cellular stores in Oxford, Quintard Mall, Jacksonville, Lenlock, Heflin and Birmingham before selling the business to Yello Wireless in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Evonne Pugh of Anniston; his daughters, Deborah Pugh of Anniston, Rebecca Pugh Hamilton and her husband Gil of Scottsdale, AZ, Step-daughters Nicole Turley of Naples, FL and Megan Moses and her husband Michael of Ohatchee, his grandchildren, NaTasha, Nick, Alex, Kathryn, Wil, Evan, Kaylee and Eric; his brothers, Armon Pugh and his wife Kay of Gadsden and Richard Pugh and his wife Lynne of Opelika; his sister, LaRue Pugh Maughon of Rainbow City and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Armon D. Pugh, Sr. and LaFay Lokey Pugh and a brother, Ronald Pugh.
