David was the eleventh of fourteen children born to Josiah and Sarah Martin. Four of their children, Rebecca, Lucy, Ephraim, and David are buried side by side in the North Woolwich Mennonite Meeting House Cemetery.

Sometime between David's death in February 1887 and the birth of their next child, Sarah, in May, 1888, Josiah, Sarah, and ten children moved from Woolwich Township, Ontario, to May City, Iowa.
