Claude "Blackie" Evans, 71, of Henderson, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2007.
He was born Nov. 26, 1935, in Joplin, Mo., and had lived in Las Vegas for 54 years.
He was a retired AFL-CIO leader. Claude was a prominent labor leader and political activist, he began his career at the titanium plant in Henderson, and went on to lead the state's largest labor organization for 21 years, as chief of the AFL-CIO and as executive board member of the National Federation. He was a longtime champion for working men and women, he was an iconic presence, lobbying on their behalf.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Evans; father, Homer Evans; and brother, Danny Evans.
Claude is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Carolyn; son, Steven Evans of Las Vegas; daughter and son-in-law, Sheree and Mike Cassingham of Reno; daughter and son-in-law, Seanna and Gregg German of Henderson; daughter, Lisa Evans of Henderson; four grandchildren, Brittany, Cierra, Alex and Geena; sister, Joy Barnes of Joplin, Mo.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, with services to follow, both at Palm Mortuary, 7600 Eastern Ave.
A reception will follow.
