Mr. Turano was born in Westerly, son of the late Santo and Bomina (Alice) Turano and had worked as partner and contractor for the Smith and Turano Builders Co. until retiring in the mid-1990s.
He was a skilled artisan and loved specializing in historic restoration and custom building, such as the Babcock-Smith House in Westerly and the Gazebo in Watch Hill.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal and was the recipient of several medals of honor having served in both the Asiatic and Pacific campaigns. He was a member of the VFW Amancio-Falcone-Gaccione Post #8955, a member of the Bradford Citizens Club and a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Bradford where he served as an usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society and the St. Ann's Society. He was an avid golfer and furniture maker and loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife in Bradford, he is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna and Ken Chapman of Bradford, Gina and David Gervasini of Bradford, and Joanne Turano of Overland Park. Kan.; a brother, James Turano of Westerly; and six grandchildren, Christopher Chapman, Geoffrey Chapman, Kelly Chapman, Hillari Gervasini, Kevin Gervasini, and Michael Gervasini.
Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent de Paul Church, Bradford, Saturday at 11 a.m. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.
