NEWPORT NEWS - Jerry McKee passed away on Nov. 13, 2012.
Born in Dallas, Texas, he graduated from Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. He has been a resident of the Hampton/Newport News area since 1965 when he was assigned to Langley AFB. He had a life long passion for flying which began when he was 13 at the Whiterock Airport in Dallas, Texas and continued through his 22 years as an Air Force officer. He served tours in Japan, Spain, Germany and Vietnam and retired from the 2nd Aircraft Delivery Group at Langley AFB in 1974.
Shortly before his AF retirement he established a health food store, "The Health Shelf" in Williamsburg, Va., which he operated for 33 years until he closed it in 2004. He was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church and was proud to serve as their head usher for several years. He was also a member of American Legion Post 255, The Torch Club, the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society and the Lafayette Gun Club.
He loved to read and listen to books on CDs. He spent many hours at the Langley AFB library and the Trible Library at CNU. The library staffs were always very gracious to him. His interests were many and varied. He was always excited about learning something new. Every day was a new opportunity for discovery although this year had been a struggle for him.
He is survived by his long time friend, Martha Wimsatt; and by his daughters, Vicki Crow of Portland, Ore., and Kim Bond of Fredericksburg, Va.; and his son, Kraig McKee of Howe, Texas. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Kraig Crow.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 45 Main Street, Newport News, Va.
Donations to honor his memory can be sent to the St Andrews Episcopal Church in his name
