Nancy Lane Humphrey passed away peacefully on May 22nd at her home in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by family and kind caregivers.
Born in Janesville, WI, on December 12, 1929, Nancy was the daughter of the late Robert and Gladys (Kramer) Lane, sister of the late Robert Lane II, and sister-in-law of the late Joane (Hampel) Lane. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 64 years, John Humphrey, of Portland; her brother, Jack Lane and sister-in-law, Patricia (Morse) Lane, of Sarasota, FL; and her children, Jean Humphrey (and husband, John Donahue) of Harare, Zimbabwe; David Humphrey (and wife, Rachel) of Portland, OR; Peter Humphrey of San Francisco, CA; and Ann Humphrey (and husband, Douglas Whitla) of Medfield, MA.
Nancy’s pride and joy were her grandchildren, Mark, Peter, and Sarah Donahue; Johnny, Daniel, Anna, and Noah Humphrey; Django Palty; Max Boyd; and Stuart and Lane Whitla. Nancy also leaves behind a large circle of close friends, some of whom she had known for a lifetime, others of whom she had met within weeks of her death.
Nancy and John raised their children in Wisconsin, Texas, and Connecticut and, after retirement, moved to Massachusetts and finally Oregon.
They were active members of the United Methodist Church in Westport, CT, and later were founding members of Grace Community Church in Walpole, MA.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Nancy will be remembered fondly for her passions, including traveling, singing, bicycling, reading the NY Times, drinking wine on the pier at the summer cottage in Sugar Camp, WI, and walking the beach in any kind of weather. She inherited a love of antiques from her parents and, with John, restored a beautiful antique home in Westport, CT.
Nancy will be most remembered, though, for her open and curious mind; her enthusiastic sense of adventure; her caring and genuine interest in people; her enduring faith; and, particularly later in life, her positive energy, resilience, and strength.
She loved nothing more than learning new things, meeting new people, and exploring new places.
A celebration of Nancy’s life was held at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Portland on May 27th. A second celebration will be held at the United Methodist Church in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
