She is survived by two sons, G. Frederic Joy, and wife, Linda, of San Antonio, TX, and Timothy H. Joy, and wife, Laurie, of Jacksonville. She is also survived by a grandson, Brandon F. Joy, of Warner Robins, GA; and a grand-daughter, Shale J. Bushnell, and her husband, Jeff, of Swansea, MA. Betty's only great-grandchild is young Rowan Howard Bushnell of Swansea, MA.
Betty's only surviving sister is Maxine Mann Kinsland, and her husband, Carroll, of Canton, NC.
Betty was born to Joseph Baxter Mann and Daisy Etta Mann on August 7, 1924 and raised on a farm near Canton, NC. with two brothers and four sisters. She graduated from Beaverdam High School. At the onset of World Word II, with her mother's approval, she joined the Navy WAVES, and was stationed at Camp Blanding, FL. There she met her future husband, the handsome and even-tempered man from Maine- Howard Welch Joy. Betty was discharged from the WAVES in July, 1946; and she and Howard were married that October. They remained happily married for over 50 years, until his death in 1997.
Except for several years spent in Atlanta, GA, Norfolk, VA, and Newfoundland, Canada; Betty was a long-time resident of Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville. Once her sons had entered high school, Betty returned to the work force in the 1960s, becoming a civil servant in the Comptroller's Dept at NAS Mayport. She stayed there for many years before transferring to NAS Jacksonville, where she finished her career and promptly went into permanent retirement.
Betty and Howard were active in their church, Christ United Methodist Church-on Penman Road, joining during the Church's formative years before the current sanctuary was built. Betty also dedicated time to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) and joined the Toast mistress International during her retirement years.
As a responsible and responsive member of the Greatest Generation, Betty will long be remembered as a loving wife and mother and friend to many who knew her.
