Bertha and her husband Wesley worked for 38 years in Angola, West Africa as missionaries under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Their daughter Helen was born there in 1883. They returned to the U.S. in 1920 because of Wesley's poor health, and settled in Claremont, CA, as residents of Pilgrim Place.

Wesley was the son of Joseph Stover and Sarah Maier/Mayer/Meyer

Bertha lived with her daughter in Los Angeles for many years following Wesley's death in 1922. In June of 1946 they both moved to Pilgrim Place retirement community in Claremont, CA, where Bertha died 5 years later at age 99.

Mrs. Bertha Dodge Stover of 521 Harrison avenue. Pilgrim Place, Claremont, passed away at 6:15 o'clock this morning.

Mrs. Stover was born February 4, 1852, in Wheaton, Ill. She and her husband, the late Wesley M. Stover, served for 38 years In An gola, West Africa, as missionaries under the American board, They came to Claremont from Angola upon their retirement in 1920. and Mr. Stover passed away Jn 1922. Mrs. Stover moved to Pilgrim Place in 1946. She was a member of Park Congregational church in Los Angeles. She is survived by a daughter, Helen H. Stover of Claremont. Private funeral services will be held in Todd Memorial South chapel Thursday afternoon. Memorial services will be held at a later date In Abernathy hall. Claremont. Friends are requested not to send flowers.
