Joanne Lane Cook, 82, peacefully transitioned into the loving arms of her Creator in her home, Saturday, July 11, 2020, surrounded in love by her family, friends and caretakers. Graveside service will be Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at 10 AM in Pioneer Cemetery in Graham with Eusebio "Chevy" Bueno (lifelong friend and now pastor) officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Joanne was born September 19, 1937 in Santa Anna, Texas to the late C.C. (Coleman) Lane and Lily Ruth West Davis. Upon her mother marrying Ode Pearson, she became the eldest sister to JoNell, Leon, and Mary Pearson, all deceased.
Joanne married Donald Ray Cook on November 15, 1961. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2005. From her earliest days to her latter days, Joanne experienced hard times and good times throughout her life. In high school, Joanne became what was known as a baton twirler or drum majorette. After school, she sold tickets to the movies at both National and Leon Theaters during the day. At night, she sold movie tickets at the Graham Drive-In Theatre. While raising her daughter, Candace, Sears set up shop and she was hired. She remained there for many, many years, enjoying her work and co-workers.
She preferred a simple life, including the home she and Don built in the early part of 1978 (quite literally rock by rock at times), gardening, and growing flowers. In the 90's, Joanne grew quite the flower garden atop Pine Tree Road, where many people stopped to pick their own flower bouquets. She delighted in bringing laughter and happiness into other people's lives and was quite the social butterfly. Also, the last 15 years of her life, she made many road trips with her daughter or grandson traveling as far west as Hawaii, as far north as Canada, as far south as Mexico, and to the east coast. Very few states were left untravelled as she was awed and delighted to see the beauty and marvels of cities, cultures, oceans, and majestic mountains.
Joanne had the "luck of the Irish", often finding "gold at the end of the rainbow" while enjoying horse races and casinos, from time to time with friends. Oh, and her hand drawn Christmas cards became quite the collectibles to the delight of family and friends along with her delicious cooking and baking.
The other major delight in Joanne and Don's life was spending time helping to raise their grandson, Jake Cook. During school years, they spent many a happy van-tour traveling to various after school events in which Jake participated.
Survivors include, daughter, Candace McGrath and husband Paul of Graham; grandson, Jake Cook and wife Cathy of Weatherford; great granddaughter, Winter Cook, who she fondly named "Uno", they were partners in crime and shared many happy times together. Winter became the light of her life; the two were truly a sight to behold.
