Barbara Jean Sherman, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 14, at 1:11 a.m. at Mercy Hospital, following a short but fierce battle with COVID-19.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2020, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service will follow at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2020, at the funeral home. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The family requests that all in attendance wear a mask and respect social distancing guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barbara was born December 20, 1934, in Urbana, Iowa, oldest of four children and only daughter of Merle and Laura (Palmer) Grimm.

She was united in marriage with Jerome George Sherman on June 4, 1955, in Fairbanks, Alaska, and has lived in Iowa most of her life.

She was a loving and caring mother of five sons, very active and involved in their PTA organization, even served as a president for a time. She loved music and singing and ingrained this love into her sons.

She volunteered at the Czech Museum for many years and was one of the tour guides there when three Presidents - Bill Clinton, Vaclav Havel from the Czech Republic and Michal Kovac from Slovakia visited in 1995.

Barbara loved spending time with her family and was always the heart and soul of all the family gatherings. Her favorite pastimes were bowling (she was involved in the senior league as a member of 'Golden Girls' team till March 2020), and going to casinos, where she always took it with good humor whether she won or lost.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Jerome; by her parents, and by two brothers Larry and Edward Grimm.

Left behind and grieving are her sons, Jerome III Sherman of Cedar Rapids; Joseph (Alexandra) Sherman of Requiao, Portugal; Peter (Radka) Sherman of Cedar Rapids; Edward Sherman of Cedar Rapids; and Robert Sherman of Ely, Iowa; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Jessica Sherman, Michelle (Mark) Campbell and Addie, Jacob and Hannah; Joshua (Amber) Sherman and Jack; Zach (Courtney) Sherman and Lucas and Caleb; Sarah Sherman, Barbara Isabel Sherman, Petra-Elizabeth Grace Sherman, Alexander Jerome Sherman, Hailey Sherman, Janie Sherman and Jenna Sherman; brother Merle (Georgene) Grimm; and numerous nephews, nieces and many friends.
