Thomas Michael Welsh left us July 5, 2020, in South Jordan, Utah. He was known by many names—usually just Mike. But the names his loved ones knew him by were dad, husband, son, brother, uncle, grandpa and friend. He was a monument in our lives—he was a pillar to any life he touched; we are so grateful we were able to be included in his journey. Mike was a focal point in our lives and he will be missed to a degree that cannot be explained or expressed with any emotion or explanation.
Born on October 31, 1957, in Inglewood, California, to a loving mother, Mike would grow up to be an unchained soul—he was determined to define his own path and he did. For all of his life, Mike set his own course and decide his own outcomes. After growing up and living in Southern California, Mike moved to Idaho with his family. He then moved to Canada, learning to work on a ranch and build log cabins and survive the Canadian wilderness. That is where he learned his strong work ethic and devotion to customer service.
Mike was a top-notch salesman dedicated to the clients he served. After leaving Canada, Mike spent time in Boise as a telecommunications consultant and would later move to Salt Lake City and continue his work in that industry. Mike would then grow to serve a pivotal role in the company he worked for and contributed greatly to the success of his organization.
He was a hero to six children and they looked up to him—he was a rock, he served as a soft landing place whenever we were in trouble or needed guidance or help. Mike was always there with an open ear and a kind hug—he always let us know everything would be okay.
He adored his mother, Marianne and his brother, Mark. Mike was a devoted husband and cherished all the adventures he and Tammy went on together. Whether it was Maui or the Christmas Tree Festival, they always had a good time and loved every minute. He was a nurturing individual who had a loving family and an abundance of close friends—if you were a friend of Mike’s, you were a friend for life and that meant an enormous deal to him. You were always safe with Mike and that was never a question.
If he wasn’t tasting a cabernet in Napa Valley or snowmobiling somewhere not too far from Daniel’s Summit, he was checking to see how Boise State football was doing or seeing what other sports standings looked like. He was a family man that cared for everyone. We will miss him, but we know he is at peace and smiling down on us.
Our family would like to thank all of the healthcare providers that nurtured and took care of Mike towards the end of his life—thank you for the exceptional healthcare you provided. Specifically, our family would like to thank Sean Strope with Huntsman Cancer Institute, Brittany Tryon with Huntsman at Home and the entire team that helped Mike at The Huntsman Cancer Institute. We are forever grateful for the time you were able to provide us and the care you gave him.
