In 1851, after his ordination, he emigrated to the United States and served at Rock River (near Watertown), WI, from 1851 - 1865. From 1851 - 1853, he served as missionary in northeast Iowa and Minnesota, the first pastor from Norway to serve west of the Mississippi River.
From 1865 - 1882 Brandt taught languages and religion at Luther College, in Decorah, IA.
He was one of the six pastors who founded the Norwegian Synod in 1853 and served as its Vice President from 1857-1871. He was on the Synod's church council from 1857-1884. He served as the associate editor of the "Kirketidende" (Church Tidings) from 1869 - 1877.
