ed From Baptist Church at Blakesburg Friday.

Charles W. Derby one of the honor-
ed pioneers of Wapello county and a veteran of the famous Graybeard reg-
iment, died at his home in Blakesburg Thursday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock. Mr. Derby was 81 years of age and had been a resident of Wapello county for fifty-nine years. Mr. Derby was well known in Ottumwa and throughout the county and was highly esteemed 'by all. He was one of the earliest settlers of Wapello county and was for many years successfully engaged in farming but retired several years ago. He was the grandfather of W. A. Derby of this city and his son G. W- Derby resides south of the city. The other surviving children are: Mrs. Ann Commons of Peabody, Kan., Mrs. Nancy Peck of Blakesburg, Nelson Derby of Wapello county William Clark Derby of Peabody, Kans. and Mrs. Ina Vancleve of Blakesburg. The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church at Blakesburg Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Howe officiating.
Sketch of His Life.
Charles W. Derby was born in Addison county, Vermont, June 23, 1816. He emigrated with his parents to Ohio, when a mere child and received his education In the pioneer log school house. He was united in marriage with Miss Jane Longwell, August 30, 1838. In 1845 Mr. Derby came with his family to Iowa, making the trip overland with teams, cooking by the wayside and sleeping in the wagon at night. He entered a claim in Adams township. During the first seasons in which he raised crops he was obliged to haul his grain to Keokuk and the nearest mill was sixty miles away.
Member of Graybeard Regiment.
Before the outbreak of the civil war Mr. Derby was strongly opposed to slavery and after the first call for arms he enlisted-in the Thirty-seventh Iowa infantry, known as the Graybeard regiment. He served until the close of the war in a courageous manner. This regiment was-composed if of 45 years and over and the object of it was to do garrison duty and let the young men during the attack on that place several were killed and wounded. Company E was from Wapello and Mahaska counties.
