Obituary,
The Waterloo Record, 8 July 2020:
Anna Mae BOWMAN (Bowman), 1930 - 2020 -
Anna Mae Bowman of Kitchener, died at her residence on Saturday July 4. Anna was born in Wilmot Township to Aaron and Selinda Bowman on April 4, 1930. She was the youngest of 4. Anna spent her early life on the family farm. With her forward thinking, she was a woman ahead of her time. She is remembered for her passion for helping those who had trouble finding their way and for her steady friendship and mentoring of colleagues who relied on her advice and great strategizing when dealing with difficult situations.

Anna is survived by her nieces and nephews Cheryl (Ron Lowe); Lynda Reier; Kathy (Myles) Nafziger; Jim (Sue) and great nieces and nephews Jonathon (Emily) Theo, Evelyn; Jennifer (Mike Boylan) Finn, Milo; Kristen (Mark Falkenbuger) Kailey; Philip Reier; Matthew (Kate Myles) Sam; Mark Myles; Aaron (Natalie); Megan (Tom Wong); Vicki Lowe (Scott Parry); Caron Lowe (Melanie Christou) Isabella, Nathaniel; Meredith Lowe (William Teng) Andrew, Julia; Adam Lowe (Joanne) Fiona, Henry. She was predeceased by her brothers and sister: Stanley, Delton, Mary; sisters in law Lillian and Jean and her nephew Paul and nephew in law Ron Nafziger. She is remembered by Dorothy Bowman.

Anna was not able to continue in school past grade 8. At age 21 she began a voluntary service assignment with Mennonite Central Committee at Wiltwyck School for Boys for juvenile offenders in New York. Anna describes this as life-changing as it introduced her to social workers and stimulated her interest in social work as a profession. She enrolled at Goshen College, a liberal arts church college in Goshen Indiana, for her bachelors degree. She then received her Masters of Social Work from Smith College School for Social Work in Massachusetts, completing it in 1961.

Following graduation she worked in York Pennsylvania, then spent 10 years employed by Children's Aid Society of Metropolitan Toronto as Director of Warden Woods Community Service and later as Director of Personnel Training.

In 1978 she returned to Goshen College joining the faculty, teaching and serving as Director of Social Work Education. She was instrumental in getting the Social Work Education Program accredited and in developing and advocating for the Women Studies Program. Anna retired in 1998, returning to Canada in 2007 to live in her apartment at Winston Park. In the following years she developed new friendships and was able to reconnect with Canadian friends and deepened relationships with her family.

Anna's family are very grateful for the wonderful care by the staff at Winston Park; Doctors Lee-Poy, Mensah and Yew; LHIN Palliative Care Team. A private burial will be held at the Wilmot Mennonite Church cemetery and memorial service at Mark Jutzi Funeral Home in New Hamburg. The family request no flowers be sent and in lieu, donations can be made to the Foodbank of Waterloo Region and Mennonite Central Committee, Anna's favourite charities.
