John Henry Murphy was born into slavery but he was freed by the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. He served in the Civil War as a sergeant. On April 13, 1892, he merged his church newspaper The Sunday School Helper with two other church publications, The Ledger and The Afro-American to form The Afro-American. Mr. Murphy tirelessly used the pages of the newspaper to fight against injustices like housing segregation. By the time of his death in 1922, The Afro-American had expanded to other cities and was the most widely circulated African American newspaper on the East Coast. His family continued to manage the paper after his death and rose to political prominence in Baltimore.
