Geo. Chandler is Drowned in Ogden River
--------------------------------------
A terrible accident, resulting in the death by drowning of George Chandler, an aged pioneer, occurred yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Chandler was 56 years of age and came to Utah from England in 1862, taking up residence in Salt Lake City, where he remained until 1882, and then removed to Ogden. He has been a butcher since boyhood and was the proprietor of a neat little shop opposite Lester Park on Twenty-fourth street, and the owner of a good business. His calling often necessitated business trips into the country and a one-horse light spring wagon was purchased for the purpose. Yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock, the gentleman started for a farm across the river with the intention of buting calves, and took the road leading down from the Reform School grounds. The ford at the place has always been considered dangerous, but seemed no more so than usual yesterday, although the melting snow has raised the waters of the river considerably during the past few days. Nothing daunted by the rushing flood, Mr. Chandler urged his horse forward, following the regular road. When the middle of the stream was reached the current caught the vehicle and whirled it, horse and all, completely around. The animal, however, succeeded in regaining his feet and planted them upon a gravelly bar, but to no purpose, the stream proved too strong for it, and wagon, man and horse were thrown into the waters.
