Mother of General Hunter Liggett. She has been virtually unrecognized either by name or burial until 2018.
She died 23 days after the birth of Hunter, her only known child. The place of birth had always been disputed between Reading and Robeson township. James is recorded in United Methodist of Reading records as a church leader in the same month son Hunter was born. Hunter was nursed by Ellen Luft, wife of civil war soldier Edward Luft, who lived on Buck Hollow Road near White Bear, near the White Bear Hotel in Robeson township. The hotel was operated then by Hunter's father James Liggett. Ellen had also been nursing her own baby Edward when Hunter was born. During his young childhood years Hunter was cared for by his father's sister Elizabeth, wife of Kersey Riter. They were Quakers. When his father remarried to Catharine Amole he was brought to their home where he continued his education in Birdsboro. No step siblings are known. In June of 1877 he was a cadet at West Point Academy. In 1887 when his father became deathly ill, he was a lieutenant serving in the U.S. Army in North Dakota. He traveled 4 days to Birdsboro to be with his father, who died 4 days after his arrival.
There were no known children of General Liggett.

Mother Margaret's family lived in the Elverson area of Chester county. Both her father and grandfather were clergymen.
