He received his Medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in 1955 and his degree in hospital administration from Baylor University. He served in Vietnam from 1966-1968 as Commander of the 17th Field Hospital, 44rd Medical Brigade, Saigon, and was the personal physician of General William Westmoreland while in Vietnam. After serving at several US and foreign military hospitals, he retired from military service in 1977. He went on to be an Orthopedic Surgeion for Kaiser Permanente, switching to Occupational Medicine following a residency at Duke University School of Medicine in Occupational and Industrial Medicine. He retired in 2015 from medicine after a total of over 60 years, 37 of them working for Kaiser.
He was predeceased by his parents, Donald Heath Tilson and Anne Rowlands Coe Tilson; his wife, Kirtley Jane Gunn Tilson; a son, John Tilson; a brother, William Coe "Bill" Tilson; and an infant sister, Annabelle Tilson. He was survived by his three sons and their spouses; his daughter-in-law; a brother and his spouse; a brother-in-law; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Interment on October 16, 2020.
