12 September 1918, John signed up for the World War I draft in New Madrid County, as John Henry Crabb, born 7 July 1876, occupation is jeweler, self employed in Parma, wife is Ella Gee Crabb, medium height, stout built, gray eyes, dark hair, no disabilities. Serial #2667, order #A2983.
From the newspaper of New Madrid County, "The Weekly Messenger," May 1, 1936, page 4: John Crabb died suddenly at his home Monday evening from heart failure. He was 60 years old and one of Parma's pioneer citizens. He lived here and helped build up our town back in 1900 to about 1926 and moved away but had returned to Parma and again established his home here and was working his trade as a jeweler. He leaves his 3 sons from his former wife, his present wife and his father is still living, also 3 sisters and 2 brothers. One brother Austin lives here, the other Roy is still living in Flint, Michigan. Funeral service was held at the home of Ira Wilson, his brother-in-law, and the body laid to rest in Parma Cemetery, Tuesday afternoon. The writer can personally say John Crabb was one of the best Odd Fellows, I have ever known. He worked faithfully with Parma Lodge through his flourishing days and always did his part by a brother and tried hard to hold the Lodge together in its declining days.
From John's death certificate: John Henry Crabb, born 7 July 1876 in Illinois to Fountain Crabb and Margaret Hubbard. He died on the 27th of April 1936, in Parma, Como Township, New Madrid County. He was married to a Lena Crabb, and his occupation was jeweler. He was buried in the Parma Cemetery, in Parma on the 28th of April 1936, by Knight Funeral home.
John's father can be found in the 1880 Agriculture Census in Grand Pier Precinct, Pope County, State of Illinois, page 15, E. D. 82 on line 2 as Fountain Crabb, with line 1 containing Thomas Crabb, 28th June 1880.
