Early settler of Sangamon County, IL. One of eleven children of Caleb and Rebecca Stafford, Orson went to sea at 13 years of age. He was crippled and disabled for life in a shipwreck in 1835. After serving as a government surveyor selecting sites for lighthouses on the Great Lakes, he came to Springfield, IL, in 1837. He married Eliza Sherman in 1841 and had one daughter who died at the age of one year. He was a dry goods merchant, a home builder, an editor of the Illinois State Journal newspaper and a member of the Springfield City Council from 1854 to 1855. He died in St. Augustine, Florida, where he and his wife had retired. His vault is the only hillside vault in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
