Continental Congressman. He studied law and began a practice while also becoming involved in Connecticut government and politics. He served in the state's Colonial Legislature from 1756 to 1760 and 1763 to 1785. During the Revolution he was a Major in Connecticut's Second Cavalry Regiment. He was a member of the Continental Congress from 1783 to 1785. From 1784 to 1806 Hillhouse was Judge of New London County's Court of Common Pleas, and from 1786 to 1807 he was county Probate Judge. He served in the Connecticut Senate from 1785 to 1808. William Hillhouse was the father of Congressman and US Senator James Hillhouse, and the brother in law of Connecticut Governor Matthew Griswold.
