“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Mr. Keith Renard Bowman, also known as Keith Renard Bowman Russell, 63, was born to Dorothy Lee Bowman and James Y. Barber in Winston-Salem, NC on June 18, 1957. He became a member of the Russell family in May of 1958 at the tender age of 11 months and was the youngest son of Carl H. Russell, Sr. and Florrie Sitgraves Russell. When Keith was a baby, his mother didn’t ever think he would walk because his sisters would pass him from arm to arm because he was “their” baby. Throughout his entire life, he remained their baby. Keith left this world from labor to reward and transitioned to heaven on Thursday evening, June 25, 2020.

Keith was an energetic youngster, loved animals, cartoons, playing outside, and canvassing his Bowen Park neighborhood. His early days were spent at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic School and then Central High School. He loved looking at television and you could always find him enjoying all the jingles or the commercials – he knew the words to all of them.

Keith joined the United States Army for a brief period of time, worked odd jobs, and worked diligently at his family’s business, Russell Funeral Home. He enjoyed his independence, and later started working with Cliff Harvel and various other moving companies.

Keith loved his many brothers and sisters and he especially loved his canine companion, “Sophisticated.” She loved her daddy and was always nearby. If he left home, she would always be right there awaiting his return. He enjoyed playing ball with her on their many outdoor adventures. Keith was very proud of her and he would often call his siblings so that they could hear Sophisticated sing. She brought much joy to Keith’s life and he to hers.

Keith was a member of St. James AME Church and also attended various other churches in Winston-Salem, NC including Macedonia Worship Center.

He never met a stranger and knew just about everyone in the Bowen Park community. Keith had a heart of gold and would literally do anything he could to help someone else out. His spirit, infectious smile, and outgoing personality will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his biological parents, Dorothy Bowman and J.Y. Barber; his parents, Carl H. Russell, Sr. and Florrie S. Russell; his twin brother, Kevin Bowman; sisters, Charlene Russell Brown, Sureda Bowman and Beatrice Bowman; brothers, Carl W. Matthews, Carl H. Russell, Jr., and Frederick Bowman.

Left to cherish precious memories are his siblings, Carolyn Russell Webster, Edward B. Russell, Christopher W. Russell, Sr., Constance Russell, Camille Russell Love, Cynthia Russell Bruton, Cedric (Lita) Russell, Carmen Russell Bonham, Sandra Murdock, Fresha Stanford, Claudette Brown, Daphne Morrell, Brian (Maria) Bowman, Claude Bowman, Carmon Bowman, Minnie Warren, and Sam Bowman, Jr.; special cousin, Paul Foote; close friends, Karen “Merle” Timmons, Lorraine, Clevetta, “Incubator,” Tony, and Larry; his doggie daughter, Sophisticated; and a host of nieces, nephews, the dedicated Russell Funeral Home Staff, extended family members and friends.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the PQA Healthcare staff, especially Dr. Fox, Tracey, Clyde, and Nika for the excellent care they provided for Keith. May God Bless each of you!

The family requests NO FLOWERS. Instead we humbly request, In lieu of flowers, that donations be made in Keith’s honor to Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods, 1650 Ivy Avenue Winston-Salem, NC 27105-6024, ATTN: Veronica Bitting. Each and every gift will be properly acknowledged.

Private funeral services will be held Thursday, July 2, 2020. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
