James Lindsey Maize was born in Larchaven, Lanark, Scotland to Richard Maize and Jean Lindsey Maize. He was a well known and prominent state mine inspector. He died at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA on March 11, 1937 following a major operation. He was one of the most widely known authorities on coal mining in Pennsylvania. For a time he served as general superintendent for the Pittsburgh Terminal Coal Company and as mine foreman for the H.C. Frick Coke Company at York Run and Continental No. 1. He married Mary Louise Schollaert on August 26, 1902. They had five children: Edmond Maize, Earl Richard Maize, Roy Schollaert Maize, Jack Gordon Maize and Betty Lou Maize.
