Christine Marie Snyder, aka "The Queen," 67, passes away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 2, at home surrounded by family.
She was born in Cortland on Oct. 29, 1952, the eldest of five children, to Gerald and Martha Shields and grew up in Groton. Christine was a 1974 graduate of SUNY Cortland, where she majored in education. Soon after graduating, she found a talent for accounting, a career she held for 40 years in Cortland County, retiring at the end of August 2019.
The Queen was an active member of the community, especially the Homer Legion Auxiliary. She also supported many community organizations, such as the Cortland Repertory Theatre and the Red Cross and loved spending her free time giving back to various causes through the years.
Christine is survived by her loving children, Lora B. Snyder and Joseph F. Snyder (Jen); and grandson, Kieran Patrick; her siblings, Gregory (Diane) Shields, Lorraine Conger, Theresa (Brian) Farrell and Andrew (Missy) Alexander.
Christine was predeceased by her brother Michael (Patty Cook) Shields, in 2012; as well as her parents, Martha (Alton) Alexander and Gerald (Milene) Shields. Christine is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a vast group of friends whom she loved dearly.
The Queen had a passion for life and enjoyed hosting gatherings at her home on the lake in Preble, Alex Bay Girls Trips, local community activities, live music, wine tasting, gardening, writing poetry and being with her family. She will be remembered most as a loving mother, sister and friend. She was a doting grandmother, a great cook and woman whose laugh you could hear from the next room. She was generous, always brought a smile to those around her and was a tremendous support to her family. Her generosity, warmth and humor stayed with her until her final moments and will be missed dearly.
