James R. Athay, 66, of Mapleton, passed away February 19, 1999.

He was born to Henry Elzo and Mable (Jacques) Athay July 26, 1932 in Smithfield, UT. He married Nancy Brewster September 5, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple. James was born and raised in Smithfield, UT. He was educated in Smithfield and Magna and graduated from Cyprus High School. He served an LDS mission in Southern California from 1954 to 1956. He graduated from the U of U in 1958, he got a Masters degree from Seattle Pacific University in 1978, and got an Education Specialist in School Psychology from BYU in 1982. He taught Social Studies, Economics, was a counselor in secondary schools and was a school psychologist.James had many church callings including Elders Quorum Presidency, Scoutmaster, Gospel Essentials Teacher, President of Stake Seventies with Stake Missions, High Counselor and Member of Bishopric. He particularly enjoyed callings where he could teach the gospel. He loved missionary work. At the time of his illness he and Nancy were service missionaries at the Spanish Fork Bishops Storehouse and were working as ordinance workers at the Provo Temple, a calling they both cherished. James served as the Chaplain for the Washington State Guard, retiring in 1997 with the rank of Major and was ready to be mobilized during Desert Storm. They moved to Mapleton, UT in 1992 where he retired. He touched many lives with his service. He and Nancy are the parents of five children. He was a gentle, kind, guileless man.

James is survived by his wife, Nancy Anne Brewster of 41 years of marriage; his children: Mark (Lynne), Bountiful, UT; Marianne (Michael) Hyde, Richfield, UT; Sheila, Richfield, UT; Kent, Portland, OR; Sylvia (Michael) Bundrant, Edgewood, NM; brothers: R. Grant Athay, Mesa, AZ; Robert E. Athay, Portsmouth, RI; and seventeen grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at 10 a.m. in the Mapleton Stake Center, 970 North 400 East, Mapleton, UT. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, UT, or Wednesday one half hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Smithfield Cemetery.
