Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 12th Vermont Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during his brigade's celebrated flank attack on Pickett's Charge during the Third Day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 3, 1863). His citation reads "Passed through a murderous fire of grape and canister in delivering orders and re-formed the crowded lines". During the battle he served on the staff of II Corps commander Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock, and was one of the two officers who caught him when he was wounded during the Charge. His Medal was issued on June 27, 1892. In 1866 published the two-volume work "Vermont in the Civil War: A History of the Part Taken by the Vermont Soldiers and Sailors in the War for the Union 1861-1865". In 1895 he published the work "Army Life in Virginia: Letters from the Twelfth Vermont Regiment and Personal Experiences of Volunteer Service in the War for the Union 1862-1863".
