Josie Lee Harrelson, wife of Daniel Gussie Hicks, married 20 sep 1913 in Covington county, Alabama. Daughter of Thomas S. Harrelson & Ida Saphronia Tipton, both of Rose Hill, Covington AL.

Daniel & Josie Lee down from Andalusia abt 1919, when daughter Mary Lee was just over 3 & my grandmother, Elsie, was 4, almost 5, riding by uncovered wagon, pulled by the family ox. Daughter Mary Lee remembered the trip well & enjoyed telling me about it. They arrived down in the area of Garden City, at the "big house", where Josie's Aunt Martha & her half-sister Mary Joyce were residing. Josie's sister, Lou Anna, was with her & Daniel, always lived with them. The sisters were very seldom ever apart. It took hospital stays to part them. They remained living in the "big house" after Daniel's death in 1967 til eventually, they became too frail and moved in with daughter, Mary Lee. I remember them there, both so tiny, so fragile. Josie Lee helped tend to Lou Anna who was bed-ridden, what little she could, needing to be bedridden herself, but refusing in her need to tend to her sister, herself. They were moved to a nursing home where Lou Anna passed 20 June, and Josie Lee was moved to one closer to home & the family, and joined her sister 31 July. When Lou Anna passed, Josie Lee was completely lost.

A small woman, slight of frame, diligent in how things were done & done right. And no kids around or up in her pear trees and don't you dare bite one... she'd chase you out with a broom... I didn't believe that til I saw her for myself. She would come 'flying' out of the house & down off the back porch, with long skirt & apron blowing, waving her straw broom & yelling at us kids. Looked like a scene from a Disney movie. But if you behaved, she was a very gentle, kind woman. Just no nonsense.

There were always fresh fruit pies on the shelf in the big kitchen with the table being a couple of long picnic tables & benches pushed lengthwise... with food end to end.

She enjoyed reading her bible, stitching and playing her organ that her husband had gotten her. When the organ got to where it would no longer play, he took off the upper part, with it's carved & etched wood features, carved spindles and a small interior shelf with a small mirror centered against the back. These features making it look like the upper section of a china cabinet or a nicely carved headboard for a bed. So, he placed it on a 2 door/2 shelf cabinet he had made, thus it looked like like a nice custom made kitchen cabinet for her.

Husband, Daniel Gussie Hicks, interred beside her in the Harrelson family plot. The Martha & Mary J Harrelson near her, were her aunts & the Lou Anna near her was her beloved sister. Her aunts & sister never married.
