BROWN, Joseph Henry Age 90, of Beavercreek, passed away on July 5, 2020. Interment to follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens.
Published in Dayton Daily News on Jul. 9, 2020.

Joseph Henry Brown, born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 30, 1929, was the sixth of eight children of Philip and Nina Matthews Brown. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to the farming community of Trap, North Carolina, near Colerain, where his father farmed during the years of the Great Depression. Joe and his family survived many deprivations during the 1930s, rarely having cash and often bartering for goods and services. Joe owned his first pair of new shoes at the age of 9. However, his large family was fortunate enough to have sufficient food because his mother grew large gardens and canned extensively every year. In 1947, Joe joined the U.S. Air Force. He was first stationed in Japan (where he learned to ski), Morocco, Libya, (where he gained an appreciation for the extreme daily temperatures in North Africa), and the Sealand RAF base in England. While stationed in England, Joe met WAF service woman Ann Elliott. They returned to the U.S. to be married in 1957 and subsequently have three children, Lisa, Steven and Richard. Joe was stationed in MS, NJ, IL, AK, IN, and VA, and he served in Vietnam in 1965. Joe retired from the Air Force in 1967, and he and his family settled permanently in Beavercreek, Ohio. This was where he worked in procurement at Defense Electronics Supply Center (DESC) until his retirement. Joe enjoyed keeping up with current events, following sports, gardening, and teaching his adult Sunday school class at Beavercreek Baptist Church for nearly 20 years. Joe had a gift for language, writing and oral communication. He loved researching his Sunday school class topics and presenting them each week. He’s been a devoted member of Beavercreek Baptist Church for 47 years and served in other church callings including helping with food deliveries to people in need. Joe and Ann enjoyed traveling after their Air Force years and made several trips to Europe, Canada, Iceland, and Greenland. They enjoyed taking their grandchildren on trips, too, visiting FL, WV, VA, and AK, as well as states in between. Joe and Ann loved watching Jeopardy! and playing Scrabble, the Brown family’s favorite game, and they taught their children how to play the game well also. Joe was a life-long fisherman. He loved fishing and camping while stationed in AK, but also fished extensively on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a family favorite vacation spot. He also fished frequently in Rocky Fork Lake in Ohio. He passed his love of fishing on to his grandchildren, taking them fishing with him whenever possible. Joe has been a devoted grandpa to Daniel, Chris, Thomas and Peter Brown, the sons of Cathy and Rich, and to Lisa’s daughters, Julie (Jesse) Sherr and Susan (Tom) VandeKraats. He loved to recount stories of the funny things the grandkids did and said during their growing up years. Joe also delighted in his great grandchildren, Johnny, Cheyenne and Elise.
