He retired as Brigadier General and was later given the retired rank of Major General. He died at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

Captain Edwin Wittenmyer of the National Army paid a visit to his large circle of friends here the first of week by whom he was warmly received. Captain Wittenmyer has been absent in the Phillipines and China for the past three years, and returned to the states some two weeks ago. He is spending a short time with home folks in Adams county. He looks the picture of health and he says he never feel better in his life. He will likely be stationed upon the expiration of his furlough, either at St. Louis or San Francisco.
